    Description

    Come and learn how to make a lovely gathered lampshade! In this 2-day workshop run by Jane Warren from The Lampshade Loft, you will you will learn all the skills needed to make these popular lampshades along with gathered linings and handmade bias trims.

    You will be taught how to:

    Day 1:

    • Bind your lampshade frame
    • Learn two methods to gather your chosen outer fabric
    • Hand sew it in place using streetly (lampshade) stitch

    Day 2

    • make a gathered lining using our soft chalk white linen fabric
    • learn two methods to make bias binding and attach this to complete your lampshade

    In addition, there will be demonstrations on making balloon linings, various trims and advice given on frames and fittings. The methods learnt on this course will ensure your lampshade is finished to a high standard, and you will then be able to go on to make more shades, either professionally or for your own use.

    About your Teacher:

    Jane Warren runs her fab business The Lampshade Loft, and has been teaching
    lampshade making for over ten years. Her book The Complete Guide to Lampshade
    Making was published in 2024 (Crowood Press).

      Materials:

      Ideal fabrics for these lampshades are fine, thin fabrics such as Liberty lawns, fine silks and cottons, quilting fabrics or Indian block prints or even saris. Please avoid heavier fabrics, velvets, jersey or other stretch fabrics. If you have a large pattern please note it may be lost in the gathers. Please do ask us if you are unsure about your fabric choice.

      You will need a minimum of 50cm of fabric for your shade, however we will be joining widths so if you have a larger pattern, please bring more. You are welcome to bring your own outer fabric or you can purchase it on the day (you will receive 10% discount as a student) however please allow yourself time to choose it before the class commences.

      The empire lampshade frame will have a base diameter measurement of 25cm/10” .

       You will need a £12 budget for the frame, tape and lining fabric (cash paid directly to the tutor on the day, please)

      Class Size: Maximum class size of 6.

      Skills: Please note that although this course is suitable for beginners, it helps to have a love of hand sewing, as there is a lot!

      Venue: This workshop will be held at Clothkits which is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest place to park is The Cattle Market Car Park on Market Avenue.
