    Description

The Stork embroidery scissors from British heritage brand Ernest Wright have become a favourite among many for their friendly look and their ability to make precise cuts. These scissors are a valuable part of any embroider’s toolkit and come presented in a high quality box, but did you know they were originally designed to cut the umbilical cord?

    Total length: 4.5″ / 11.43 cm
    Blade length: 1.6″ / 4.06 cm
    Material: Hard-wearing carbon steel
    Finish: Hand polished

Care: After use, always wipe your carbon-steel scissors clean and dry, and store them away from any water, salt or humidity. It is preferable to store these wrapped (or encased) in dry cloth, dry leather, or a dry cardboard box, to protect them from airborne moisture. If you don't these scissors may be prone to discolouration or even rust.

About Ernest Wright: The history of Ernest Wright reflects everything Sheffield Steel has become famous for. Highly skilled craftsmen making supreme quality products. A lot has changed since the heydays of manufacturing, but we’re proud to be here and able to pass on the heritage of an ancient craft.

About Antique Stork Scissors (words from Ernest Wright):

We know through reference to historical price lists and antique scissors collections that stork-shaped scissors have been made in Sheffield for a very long time. However, this charismatic category of scissors is, in fact, a global phenomenon.

It is widely believed that the stork motif found in scissors originated in similarly-shaped maternity clamps, used by midwives to restrict blood flow to the umbilical cord during deliveries. The stork design seems to have migrated into specialised embroidery scissors patterns in the 19th century – perhaps aided by midwives who occupied themselves with a spot of embroidering, when they had a moment’s rest.

Our Stork Embroidery Scissors feature a quintessential stork design, with a flat-head screw representing the bird’s eye, and feathery stippling on the lower parts of the blades and the shanks. Where our Storks scissors differ from most is in their craftsmanship. Like all of our scissors and shears, these exquisite embroidery scissors are ground and put-together by hand, and rigorously quality-checked to ensure perfect performance.
