New Walk in the Woods Patchwork Quilt Workshop | Chichester Quilting Course

We love this new quilt course put together by Karen. A Walk in the Woods quilt would make such a wonderful handmade gift for someone (dare we mention Christmas?!) This 4 weeks course is suitable for the complete beginner, and teaches use of the rotary cutter and mat for quick, easy patchwork. You will make the whole quilt top during the sessions, and be shown the methods for finishing your quilt, including machine and hand quilting. There is also an option to learn a little foundation piecing, if you choose to make the deer block. Or keep it simple with just trees.

The next workshop dates are:

  • Wednesday 2nd October - Wednesday 23rd October 2019.

About your Teacher:

Karen Berry is a textile artist and an expert teacher of patchwork, quilting and applique. She is a font of all knowledge when it comes to patchwork and quilting, and even presents on the history and traditions of this ancient craft.

Class Size:

Maximum class size of 6.

Ideal for complete beginners, but equally satisfying for those with a little more skill.

To start you’ll need eight 30cm x 112cm (width of fabric bolt) assorted pieces of fabric, including a mixture of colours you like, and light, medium and dark tones. Smaller patterns work best, as large motifs can be lost in the cutting.

You’ll also need 25cm x 112cm of fabric for the tree trunks (I used brown, but you don’t have to!)

This will produce 40 tree blocks, so a quilt top approximately 42” wide x 54” L

You’ll have the option to make your quilt bigger once you’ve learned the technique, at that stage I can help you work out if you need to buy more fabric.

To finish your quilt you’ll also need some wadding and backing, the amount will be determined by the size of your finished quilt. There will be an option to learn “foundation piecing” in week 2 or 3 if you’d like to make the deer block, you can choose whether to include this or not.

Course Duration:

4 weekly sessions, each lasting 3 hours.

Workshops are held in our colourful and cosy studio, above the shop. There is lots of space to spread out and a separate chill out area to have a break. The shop is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.
