Traditional Tailored Lined Lampshade Workshop - New 2 Day Workshop| Chichester Craft Courses
In this amazing 2 day workshop, you will learn how to make a traditional tailored, lined lampshade, using the fabric of your choice.
Jane will teach you how to create a beautiful 'soft' lampshade using traditional methods - hand sewn and hand made. Unlike the contemporary 'hard' or laminated shades, these are usually curved in style, have a soft fabric cover, and soft 'balloon 'lining. They are made using various types of fabric such as silk, cotton, and wool, all of which can be tailored for a perfect fit. They will then be expertly finished by hand using lovely trims including bindings, tassels and fringes.
The lampshades do take time to create, there is much hand sewing and skill involved, but this 2 day workshop will equip you with all the knowledge and experience you need to go on to make many more beautiful lampshades for every room in your home!
Day 1: planning the fabric placement - we cut the fabric on the bias - making the pattern, wrapping the frame and pinning and sewing the cover in place - making the lining.
Day 2: sewing the lining into place, making and adding hand made trims.
This is a 2 day course, and will run for 2 consecutive weeks. The next dates are:
- Tuesday 29th January 2019, 10am - 4.30pm, for 2 consecutive Tuesdays.
About your Teacher:
Jane Warren is one talented lady, and an excellent tutor. She has many years of making lampshades under her belt. When not teaching, she is sourcing vintage shades and stands from around the world to revamp and then sell in her online shop The Lampshade Loft.
Maximum class size of 6.
Ideal for complete beginners, or for those wanting to try something new. Please do consider that this workshop is mainly hand sewing, so it is helpful if you enjoy this!
Your chosen fabric should be relatively robust - not too thin as you will be heavily stretching it, so please avoid Tana Lawn - plus if it is too thin the light bulb will be seen through the shade. Try and aim for a cotton or cotton mix, linen or silk for your first shade, not a fabric with a loose weave or one that is embellished. Your lampshade will be made using your fabric cut on the bias, so bear this in mind when choosing your fabric (i.e. if your fabric has a pattern, it will be placed at a 45 degree angle). Finally, you will need a £12 budget for the frame, tape and lining fabric (paid directly to the tutor on the day).
2 full days.
Workshops are held in our colourful and cosy studio, above the shop. There is lots of space to spread out and a separate chill out area to have a break. The shop is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.
