Square in a Square Patchwork Quilt Workshop | Chichester Quilting Course
Patchwork has never been so cool - and rightly so as it is great fun and produces beautiful results. This course is suitable for the complete beginner, and teaches use of the rotary cutter and mat for quick, easy patchwork. You will make the whole quilt top during the sessions, and be shown the methods for finishing your quilt, including machine and hand quilting.
About your Teacher:
Karen Berry is a textile artist and an expert teacher of patchwork, quilting and applique. She is a font of all knowledge when it comes to patchwork and quilting, and even presents on the history and traditions of this ancient craft.
Maximum class size of 8.
Ideal for complete beginners, but equally satisfying for those with a little more skill.
A total of 3 metres of fabric of fabric will be needed for a quilt top that is 143cm square. Any piece of fabric at least a 25cm square will be usable. 100% cotton fabric is by far the easiest to work with as a beginner, so stick to this if at all possible. We have a stunning selection of fabrics in our shop, or why not use up scrap fabrics of fabric to create your own memory quilt.
The first thing to do is decide how many colours you'd like in your quilt top.
For two colours buy 2 x 1½ metres of fabric
For four colours buy 4 x ¾ metres of fabric
For six colours buy 6 x ½ metres of fabric
For twelve colours buy 12 x ¼ metres of fabric
The more colours you include, the more random you can be with positioning your squares in your quilt. In a two colour quilt the squares will be in an ordered, geometric pattern, whereas a 12 colour quilt will be a lovely mix up of all different squares (six and four colour quilts fall somewhere in between).
If the 6 and 12 colour options are too difficult to visualise at first, feel free to buy half the fabric required to get you started. By that we mean buy 6 x ¼ metres of fabric, then once you've used that up you can decide if you want to buy the rest in the same 6 colours, or continue with 6 different ones, making twelve colours in total. You need to make sure there is plenty left on the bolt if you think you might come back for more. To finish the quilt you will also need to purchase wadding, backing and binding.
4 weekly sessions, each lasting 3 hours.
Workshops are held in our colourful and cosy studio, above the shop. There is lots of space to spread out and a separate chill out area to have a break. The shop is located in central Chichester, about a 10 minute walk from the train and bus station. The closest car park is The Cattle Market.
